Official report on the Sandy Hook shooting is released

On Monday, investigators released a report on the Sandy Hook shooting and on Adam Lanza, the gunman who killed 20 children and 6 adults at the school last December. Officials say that Lanza’s motive is unclear, but “the evidence clearly shows that the shooter planned his actions, including the taking of his own life, but there is no clear indication why he did so, or why he targeted Sandy Hook Elementary School,” the report said.

The report did say that Lanza “had significant mental health issues that affected his ability to live a normal life and to interact with others…What contribution this made to the shootings, if any, is unknown as those mental health professionals who saw him did not see anything that would have predicted his future behavior.”

When Lanza was younger, he “did not like noise and confusion and began to have issues when he had to walk to different classes,” said the report. Criminologist Casey Jordan said: “He was so enormously isolated. His mother was not allowed in his room. No one was. So this didn’t happen overnight. This was years of him slowly withdrawing, and we have that history going back to fifth grade, sixth grade.”

Lanza’s relationship with his mother continued to grow in tension, but no one expected that he would take her life the same day he went on the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook.

Connecticut State Police will release a longer evidence portfolio at a later date, and spokesman Paul Vance says that that report will be “thousands of pages long.”
