Bin Laden’s driver granted court appeal

Salim Hamdan, former driver for Osama Bin Laden, has been granted a hearing by a US appeals court. Hamdan was sent to Guantanamo Bay for giving material support to terrorism. However; the US Court of Appeals of the District of Columbia ruled 3-0 that this did not constitute a war crime. Hamdan has admitted being Bin Laden’s driver but insisted he only did it for the income, not because he was a terrorist sympathizer. He was sent to Yemen in 2009 and subsequently released two months later. He was sentenced to 66 months in jail by a US military commission, but released based on the fact that he had already spent seven years in US custody when he was detained in Afghanistan in 2001.
