Each year, Education Week compiles a nation-wide report card for ranking the performance of public schools. This year, as in the past five, Maryland has come in at first place. Education Week gave Maryland an overall B+, whereas Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia were ranked No.2, No.3, and No.4 respectively–all receiving a grade of B. Washington DC moved out of the bottom five, coming in 45th place with a grade of C-.

The ranking includes assessments of both policy and performance.
