Academics just as important as Athletics at UMD

The decision by University of Maryland president Wallace Loh to join the Big Ten conference has not come without dissenting voices–some questioning the move as too focused on athletics. Loh and other Maryland officials are stressing the academic merit of moving to the Big Ten from the Atlantic Coast Conference where they have been for 60 years. Access for students to study abroad and participate in intercampus research groups and book sharing were highlighted, although the ACC is also well respected for its academics as well. Loh also made it clear that money from athletics would be reinvested into academics.
