FCC looks into removing the ban on cellphone use in planes

For 22 years, cellphone use during flights has been prohibited due to concerns about interference with ground station communication. However, the Federal Communications Commission is looking into the possibility of changing that rule now that new technology has emerged. “Modern technologies can deliver mobile services in the air safely and reliably, and the time is right to review our outdated and restrictive rules,” FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said. “I look forward to working closely with my colleagues, the FAA and the airline industry on this review of new mobile opportunities for consumers.”

While convenience may appeal to many travelers, others are less excited about the concept of constant chatter on the plane. “My answer is quite simple: Absolutely no way. Never,” said Diane Johnson of Fort Worth. “With all the stress of travel, silence on a plane is like music to my ears.” Capt. Patrick Smith, a pilot of 20-years, added: “Just imagine 250 passengers all making calls at once. I shudder to imagine how awful that would be.”
