Across the country, gas prices are falling near or below $3

AAA reports that the average cost of a gallon of gas is now $3.19, and in six states, including Arkansas, Texas and Kansas, the average price is already below $3. Outside those three states though, gas stations can be found with prices under $3, and the Oil Price Information Service reports that 20% of gas stations nationwide are charging under $3. It is estimated that, overall, gas prices have been falling about 1 cent per day.

Chief oil analyst for OPIS, Tom Kloza, commented on how easy it is becoming to find cheap gas. “In almost half the states, you don’t need to make a great effort to find gas at $3 or less,” he said. “To a great extent, the averages are really misleading. A large station with cheap prices might sell 750,000 gallons a month, while a small independent station with high prices might be struggling to sell 100,000 gallons.”

Kloza estimates that by Christmas, over half of the states will have an average of less than $3 a gallon. Even states with high gas prices, like New York, have an average of just over $3, and therefore, it seems quite possible that a low national average is not far off.
