Purchasing a new motorcycle helmet can be more or less challenging for a variety of reasons. If you’re a complete beginner and you’ve just bought your motorbike, you’re probably feeling a little overwhelmed by the amount of information that gets thrown at you. The same goes for experienced motor bikers who want to upgrade their equipment or replace their helmet for one reason or the other. Let’s look at several factors that should influence your ultimate decision.

The type of helmet

Helmets can come in many shapes and designs and can be made for a variety of specific needs and preferences. When it comes to safety, full-face alternatives are the better ones, and that’s because they ensure that all of the parts of your head and face are well-protected, including your eye area.

Open-face units are mostly designed to be used for shorter rides. For example, if you use your motorbike to commute, this type of model is the one you should consider, as it allows you to benefit from superior ventilation. However, in inclement weather, you will have to wear both goggles and a scarf. Sunglasses might be enough for sunny days.

What about the size?

If you’re an experienced motorcyclist, you have measured the circumference of your head beforehand. As weird as that might sound, that’s specifically what must be done to ensure that  the right size helmet is chosen.  Guessing is not an option.  Once you’ve discovered this figure, you can match it with those available in the size charts created by various manufacturers. What’s the right way of going about things when it comes to the size? Is a bigger one better or a smaller one? A undersized helmet will render you uncomfortable, while an oversized helmet might be incapable of protecting you correctly and effectively. The padding needs to come in contact with your head, but it doesn’t have to squeeze you and give you a headache of sorts.

Does the design matter to you?

As we’ve noted above, nowadays there are many choices when it comes to how your helmet can look. There are cool vintage designs, modern ones, and a variety of color combinations manufactured for each and every taste. The fact is that safety should matter more to you than the design, although you definitely don’t have to choose a dull unit.

Used and new helmets

As a general rule, it might be a good idea to avoid purchasing used motor biking equipment. Unless you know the seller personally, you really don’t know whether the gear was involved in a crash.  Viewing the helmet can be deceiving in determining whether the product has been damaged before. Plus, there are ways to cover scratches and other types of damages. If you do not have enough experience, sometimes it’s better to opt for affordable gear that’s in mint condition, so that your mind is at ease as you enjoy your fun past-time or a simple journey around town.
