Twitter closes Somalia rebel group’s account

The Twitter account of the Shabab militant group in Somalia has evidently been shut down. The account once had thousands of followers and was used by the militants to broadcast their military strength and achievements. American officials have been monitoring Shabab’s use of Twitter as a potential tool for recruitment. The Shabab recently sent out a Twitter message vowing to kill Kenyan hostages if the Kenyan government did not meet its demands. The suspension of their account appears to be yet another step in the ongoing effort to quell their activities.
