On Thursday, at 7:50 a.m. local time, two SUVs plowed into shoppers at a market in Urumqi, located in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang, China. Explosives were thrown from the vehicles, which exploded almost immediately, killing at least 31 people, and injuring over 90 more. According to China’s Ministry of Public Security, the attack is being regarded as “a serious violent terrorist incident.” Attacks in Xinjiang are growing to be a commonplace in recent months; less than one month ago an explosion took place near a train station, killing 3 and injuring 79.
