After a death toll of more than 7,500 since the uprising began in 2011, Syria has finally decided to accept a peace offering to end the violence and slaughter of the Syrian people. The Syrian government has accepted United Nations envoy Kofi Annan’s proposal to create peace and end the bloodshed, Annan’s spokesman, Ahmad Fawzi, reported on Tuesday.

The U.N. Security Council supported Annan’s six-point plan to Syria. Annan’s proposal seeks to put an end to the violence and the killing, give access to humanitarian agencies, release detainees, and begin an inclusive political dialogue to address the legitimate aspirations and concerns of the people of Syria, according to a statement by the U.N. “Mr. Annan has stressed that implementation will be key, not only for the Syrian people, who are caught in the middle of this tragedy, but also for the region and the international community as a whole. As the Syrian government acts on its commitments, Mr. Annan will move urgently to work with all parties to secure implementation of the plan at all levels,” Fawzi said.
