Protesters in Egypt call for relinquishing of power

The ruling military accepted the resignation of its cabinet members Tuesday, according to a politician. All members of the Egyptian cabinet submitted their resignations Monday amid growing violence that left 33 protesters dead following three days of unrest. The offer of resignation was dismissed by protesters, who called instead for the military leaders to give up their control on the country by next summer.

Military leaders have been in control of the country for the past nine months, since the coup over President Hosni Mubarak. The escalation of violence, however, has left some Egyptians worrying that one regime has been traded for another. With the resignation, politicians say a salvation government will be formed, with presidential elections staged before July.
