President Barack Obama sent a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, formally apologizing for the burning of Qurans at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan. The U.S. ambassador delivered the letter to the Afghan president’s office on Thursday. Obama wrote, “The error was inadvertent; I assure you that we will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence, to include holding accountable those responsible,” according to a statement. Obama offered his “sincere apologies” in the letter.

This news came after two NATO troops were injured and two Afghan protestors were killed in an exchange of gunfire during a demonstrational riot outside an American base in eastern Afghanistan. There have been five deaths since the incident of the burning of the Quran and other Islamic religious materials at the U.S. base.
