A humanitarian crisis is underway in the eastern suburbs of Damascus, Syria, as global leaders assemble to discuss the conflict. The Local Coordination Committees (LCC) of Syria reported that the suburbs east of Damascus have suffered from a “complete siege and closure” after dozens were killed because of bombings. In a statement, the group said, “We appeal to the Red Cross and the Red Crescent and all relevant international organizations to go to the area and provide relief for its people with food, medicine, and shelter and to pressure the criminal regime to stop its ongoing crimes against our people.”

The U.N. Security Council is considering if they should call for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, while the Arab League Secretary- General Nabil el-Araby is set to address the council on Tuesday, as it mulls a draft resolution proposed by Morocco. The draft calls for the Syrian President to transfer power. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov cautioned that if the draft is passed, it could put Syria on a “path to civil war,” reported by the foreign ministry.
