Moammar Gadhafi and his son Muatassim were buried Tuesday at dawn in a secret location. Members of the former leader’s tribe were in attendance, to pray over the body and give him a traditional Islamic ceremony. A few relatives and officials were also among the onlookers. The body had been in cold storage, but deterioration forced the burial plans to move forward. There is still some dispute over the manner of Gadhafi’s death.
The National Transitional Council, along with the assistance of the United Nations, have promised to continue their investigation to establish whether Gadhafi was killed execution-style after his capture. An autopsy revealed he had been shot to the back of the head. The explanation previously released was that Gadhafi had been struck during a crossfire between anti- and pro-Gadhafi fighters.
