Citizens in Mexico are struggling in the wake of massive storms

Around 100 people have died from the flooding and mudslides that are results of two massive storms. Hurricane Manuel hit the west coast of Mexico, and then Hurricane Ingrid landed on the east, along the Gulf Coast. Rain and wind have washed away homes and destroyed cities, and thousands of tourists are stranded in Acapulco.

Saturnino Medina, a native of the town Renacimiento, says that he has lost almost everything, and also pointed out that there has been no government aid yet. Medina and his family hardly even had anything to eat, and were relying on donations from neighbors, and the remnants left in dumpsters. “The truth is, I don’t even know what to tell you,” he said. “The government ignores us. They help everyone else, but they’ve forgotten about Renacimiento.”

In a press conference on Thursday, federal officials said that climate conditions made it difficult to get to more remote areas of the country, but that help was on its way. “Right now we are facing a truly extraordinary condition,” President Enrique Peña Nieto said, pointing out that the rain levels were record-breaking.
