A 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Turkey, the country’s most powerful in more than a decade, had rescue teams struggling in near-freezing temperatures to find victims. At least 264 are confirmed dead, with 350 more injured. Turkey’s prime minister feared that number would rise, with rescue teams attempting to reach people trapped from collapsed buildings. Aftershocks rattled the region, some of which reached a magnitude of 6.0.

Residents slept in the streets or on rooftops following the quake, too afraid of aftershocks bringing more buildings down. The earthquake also disrupted electricity and natural gas. Neighboring countries and allies offered condolences and assistance to Turkey, including Israel and the United States.
