Northern Afghanistan police in the province of Kunduz are looking for Sher Mohammed, 29, for strangling his wife Storay, 22, after she gave birth to a third child that was not a boy. The pair got married four years ago and has three daughters, the last of whom was born three months ago. Khanabad district police chief Sufi Habib reported that Mohammed blamed his wife for her inability to have a boy. “Finally on Saturday, the man, with the help of his mother, first beat the woman and then strangled her to death,” Habib said.

Mohammed fled, but the police were able to arrest the mother, Wali Hazrata, and detained her at the Kunduz city jail. Hazrata said to authorities, “My son did not commit the crime…but after three daughters, Storay herself felt guilty and committed suicide.” The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) continues to record and fight cases of violence against women.
