6.8 magnitude earthquake strikes Japan

With a solemn remembrance of an earthquake and tsunami that rocked the country to its core on March 11, 2011, Japan was hit by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, just three days after the one-year anniversary. The earthquake, which occurred on Wednesday, shook northeastern Japan, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake was centered about 170 miles (270 kilometers) off the coast. The Japanese Meteorological agency sent out a tsunami advisory, warning of a half-meter wave. The Japanese media reported that there have been no reports of immediate damage. The earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last year killed thousands of people and triggered the world’s worst nuclear crisis in a quarter century.
