Tourism in Washington D.C. generates $6 billion

Tourism officials in Washington, D.C. report spending by tourists grew more than 6 percent last year to $6 billion, outpacing the growth in visitor numbers. The tourism bureau, Destination D.C., released statistics on Tuesday, which illustrate the District had roughly 16.1 million domestic visitors in 2011. The number is up 3.7 percent from 15.5 million domestic visitors in 2010. International visitors are counted separately.

CEO of Destination D.C. Elliott Ferguson, said it’s the sixth year D.C.’s travel industry has captured more than $5.5 million from visitors. Washington is set to host 14 major conferences, leading tourism officials to project strong numbers for visitors in 2013.
