Solar-powered carousel to support conservation at National Zoo

The Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., unveiled a new, solar powered carousel featuring hand-carved and painted figures of endangered animals on Monday. The $2.3 million project was funded by donation, including a $1.5 million contribution from the Speedwell Foundation, a private corporation from Summit Point, NJ. The 162 solar panels were donated by Pepco Energy Services, and any unused energy will be directed to the zoo’s electrical grid. Tickets to ride the newly named Speedwell Foundation Conservation Carousel will cost $3, with proceeds going to the zoo’s conservation efforts and animal care needs.
