Worldwide athletic apparel giant Nike Inc. is reportedly planning to host a half marathon in the District. WTOP reported a post from a page on Facebook, which reads, “Inaugural Nike Women’s Half Marathon-Washington, D.C.-Spring 2013.” Although Nike has not yet commented, spokeswoman for the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency Robyn Johnson said Nike has reached out unofficially to District officials about planning. The agency summons the Mayor’s Special Event Task Force, a cross-jurisdictional group that oversees major event permitting and planning.

In an e-mail, Johnson wrote, “[Nike] has not presented a proposal to the Mayor’s Special Events Task Force, therefore, at this time, I am unable to provide any additional information.” The Nike Women’s Marathon series, open to both men and women, will stop in San Francisco later this year in October. According to the page, people who finish the race get an “official Tiffany & Co. finisher’s necklace.”
