New pope suggests global outreach

Washington’s Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who participated in the papal conclave, remarked that Pope Francis’s selection was a historic moment as the Catholic Church attempts to reach out to its 1.2 million followers. The archbishop stated on Wednesday, “This is the first time in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church that we’ve had a pope from our part of the world.” He goes on to explain his excitement for having a pope from the western hemisphere who represents a newer and more modern world.

According to Wuerl, Pope Francis has already begun a non-traditional streak, as he allowed Thursday morning’s mass to be delayed due to the cardinals’ post-conclave dinner running late. For Wuerl, this simply expresses his humility and concern for others, which are aspects the conclave took into consideration when making their decision.

Wuerl hopes Pope Francis will continue his legacy as pope as he did in his Buenos Aires ministry as a loving and caring person. “I think there was a sense we were looking for someone who would be focused on the mission of the church, the ministry of the church, the gospel message and especially an outreach and care for the poor, for people with needs, many types of needs. He certainly fits that picture.” Said Wuerl.
