Navy Yard shooting victim’s family files claim

The family of a woman killed in the September shooting at the Washington Navy Yard has filed a claim against the Navy and Department of Veterans Affairs seeking $37.5 million in restitution.

Negligence is the basis of Mary DeLorenzo Knight’s family’s claim, citing it as a key factor in Knight’s death.  Her family claims that red flags of the shooter’s mental illnesses were overlooked by these two franchises.

The shooter, Aaron Alexis, opened fire at the Navy Yard on September 16 and was later killed in a shoot-out with the police.  There is documented evidence that he suffered from several mental disorders.

Filing the claim is the first step in the process of the family filing a lawsuit.
