More than 300 D.C. teachers put on notice to lose jobs

More than 300 teachers in Washington, D.C. Public Schools have been informed their jobs will be eliminated and they have until August to find other positions in the school system. On Friday, school officials announced that notices were issued to 333 teachers in the District. The school system said it expects more than 60 percent of the teachers to find new placements, meaning nearly 133 will possibly lose their jobs.

The District says the notices are necessary as school budgets and enrollments change. After their August 15 deadline, teachers with high performance ratings have a choice of a $25,000 buyout or a “grace year” when they will be placed at a school. Teachers with lower ratings are subject to firing. The process is part of an “excessing” process the District follows each year.
