Mayor stands his ground against D.C. services shutdown

District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray has stirred up the Congressional pot in regards to District city services.

Gray submitted a letter Wednesday to the federal Office of Management and Budget deeming all city services in D.C. as “essential to the protection of public safety, health and property and therefor will continue to be performed during a lapse in appropriations.”

The mayor’s intentions are to keep city services in D.C. active regardless of Congress’ approval to use local tax dollars.

D.C. Attorney General Irvin Nathan has expressed to the mayor the severity of going against federal law, but there will be a D.C. Councilmember vote next week regarding resolutions in favor of the mayor’s standpoint.

Gray says, “I will not allow the safety and well-being of District residents to be compromise by Congress’ dysfunction.”
