Low-flying helicopters will check radiation levels

Washington area residents should be informed of a project that involves low-flying helicopters canvassing the skies in an 70 square mile region around the district. Authorities are warning citizens ahead of time in an effort to quell fear of suspicious behavior in the area, especially involving aircraft. The project is being conducted by the National Nuclear Security Administration, and will test natural radiation levels throughout the DC region. The expected base-line results could help authorities warn people of increased radiation in the case of a terrorist attack or nuclear accident.

The helicopters will cover the area in a grid, flying as low at 150 feet off the ground and as fast as 80 miles per hour. The project will take place until January 11th.
