Lack of grocery stores a problem in Anacostia

Marion Barry, DC Councilmember from Ward 8, is speaking out about a perpetual cycle of marginalization that keeps the Anacostia neighborhood from enjoying the same economic booms as the rest of the city. Specifically, Marion Barry addressed the lack of grocery stores within walking distance–a problem for many residents who do not have access to a vehicle. After the Anacostia Warehouse Supermarket closed recently, residents spoke of the difficulty feeding their children healthful meals while living in Anacostia. The Warehouse, although the only convenient option for shopping, did not carry quality foods. The  The issue seems to be that businesses–especially those carrying organic and natural products–fear the risk of opening a store in a low-income area. Big developers love the low costs, but local stores carrying everyday products are lured by the likelihood of greater profits elsewhere. Marion Barry highlighted this food gap as an example of how Anacostia is consistently left behind the rest of the city.
