House pressures Redskins to change name

The House is currently placing more pressure on the Washington Redskins to change the team’s name. Reasons stem from trademark issues as well as disapproval from American Indian groups, the clergy, and other celebrities.

Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C backs the proposed change stating, “as an African-American who knows what it feels like to be called disparaging names, I signed on to the bill as a statement of solidarity with American Indians.” She claims that although she is a fan of the Redskins, she supports a new name for them.

Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen continually refuses to agree to a name change, saying the team has great pride in their name. However, House Democrats seek support from other groups to put pressure on the sports team.
