Nadya Suleman, who gained notoriety as the “Octomom” and gave birth to the only known set of octuplets to survive more than one week after birth, is being investigated for welfare fraud. An anonymous complaint was made to the Los Angeles County Department of Welfare Fraud Prevention and Investigation claiming Suleman was collecting welfare benefits despite making more about $200,000 last year from her porn video, stripping and other publicity jobs. Under California law, Suleman and her 14 children can collect welfare if she makes less than $119,000 in a calendar year. Allegedly Suleman received $1,800 per month for food as well as $1,000 for emergency cash in 2012. She also receives Medi-Cal benefits along with mental health and dental payments. Suleman has acknowledged being on welfare, but claims she did so because of the financial strain of her going to rehab for a Xanax addiction.

“My choice to go back on assistance is only a temporary one,” she said. “At this time my family needs the medical, dental and food assistance because it is so expensive.”

If she is found guilty of fraud, she could face up to three years in jail.
