Goats effects on the Congressional Cemetery

Although they were charged with clearing 1.5 acres near the Historic Congressional Cemetery, the five-dozen goats got the job done.

The cemetery’s East End was full of downed logs, ivy, and ditches, and the land overall was hard to walk through. In eight days, however, Brian Knox’s Eco-Goats were able to clear the brush.

“It’s funny, everything from about 6-feet down is cleared — everything they can reach,” says Lauren Malloy, program director for the cemetery.

There were a few plants that the goats did not fancy, but for the most part the land has been effectively cleared.

The cemetery originally wanted to bring in a landscaping crew to clear the area, but decided on an environmentally friendly solution instead.

The decision to hire the goats saved the cemetery between $5,000 and $6,000.
