The District’s registered voters have until Monday, Mar. 5 to change political parties if they wish to vote in the upcoming Republican presidential primary on Apr. 3. For primary votes, Democrat, Republican, and Statehood Green Party are the only parties that voters can affiliate themselves with. Voters can always change their parties again for the general election. Alyson McGloughcin with the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics said, “If you’re a Democrat, you can vote in the Democrat party (primary), Republicans in the Republican party primary, and D.C Statehood Green party members in the D.C. Statehood Green political party primary.”

According to figures from the D.C. Board of Elections, Democrats have the most party members in the District with nearly 75 percent, while Republicans have about 6.5 percent, and the Statehood Green Party have just under 1 percent. The District will hold a closed primary.
