Although Mayor Vincent Gray has not been charged with a crime and has denied any wrongdoing, federal prosecutors believe he was aware of the off-the-books “shadow campaign” that supported his 2010 bid for office and that he personally requested the funds from Jeffrey Thompson. Gray is currently seeking a second term and faces seven challengers in the April 1 Democratic primary. He has dismissed all allegations as false and claims he thought all fundraising done for his campaign was legitimate. Thompson pleaded guilty on Monday to two conspiracy charges. The investigation on Gray is still ongoing.
