D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson announced Monday that the 2015 budget will focus mainly on high schools in the district. Henderson explained the board’s desire to foster a high school band, install more computers, expand foreign language education beyond Spanish and French, minimize teach turnover, bolster sex education and implement better cafeteria food as much as possible. These points come from the wishlists of current high school students, and will be under consideration of Henderson and the board as they determine the budget plan. A letter sent to the community last week also mentioned the attention to improve opportunities for young men of color, increasing the ability of schools to offer longer school days and giving more access to high-level learning for more students.
