Passengers can expect to pay more for cab rides, as the $19 cap on fares will soon be removed. Under the new rate, the meter will continue to run no matter how long the cab ride. The cap did not include surcharges for extra bags and passengers, and the $1 gas surcharge will remain in effect through mid-November.
Cab drivers insist fares are too low. The fare cap removal is part of several rules proposed for the D.C. Taxicab Commission. Other proposed rules include printing receipts with detailed driver information, as well as clarification that drivers not use cell phones without a hands-free device.
