Washington D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown is proposing a new plan that would extend bar hours and alcohol sales in bars on holidays and throughout some holiday weekends. The news comes after a council committee rejected a proposal by D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray designed to raise an extra $3.2 million in revenue through additional alcohol sales. The committee recommended that D.C. instead raise its alcohol tax by 6 cents per drink.
The Washington Examiner reports that Brown’s proposal, announced on Wednesday, would permit bars to sell alcohol until 4 a.m. on all city and federal holidays. The proposal would also allow sales until 4 a.m. throughout the weekends surrounding New Year’s Eve, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. The plan would eliminate the need for raising taxes on alcohol, Brown says.
