Military order Old Guard to photograph every grave in Arlington Cemetery

In order to account for every grave and update the site’s map, the Army has ordered that the historic Old Guard photograph each and every grave in the Arlington National Cemetery using IPhones. The Old Guard leave their shined shoes, blue suits and white gloves at home for this job, slipping into the graveyard at night where they can’t be impaired by summer heat or funerals.

The group is tasked with taking photographs of nearly 219,000 graves and 43,000 cremated remains. The project stemmed from an order by Congress to document each grave after discrepancies were found as well as reported mismanagement of the famous military cemetery.
