The Washington D.C.-Baltimore corridor is anxiously awaiting the arrival of Hurricane Irene which could potentially inflict billions of dollars in damage. The storm, now a category 2 off the coast of the lower Eastern United States, is expected to hit the Mid-Atlantic as early as Saturday evening and bring with it powerful wind and rain.

Places such as Alexandria, Annapolis and the Inner Harbor of Baltimore are preparing for the storm by placing out sandbags and boarding up shops and houses. A state of emergency has been issued for Maryland and towns on the beach such as Ocean City have been given a mandatory evacuation.
