The man shot and killed by police outside of a homeless shelter in Fort Belvoir on October 30 has been identified.

Twenty-eight-year-old James Bryant was reportedly engaged in a physical altercation with someone in front of the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter when two police officers intervened.  According to the police, Bryant then assaulted one of the officers and stole his baton.  He then used it to turn on the second officer.

The police officer initially struck by the baton then opened fire on Bryant, killing him.

Bryant and the other man involved in the fight were both residents at the shelter.

Both officers are now on administrative leave as the investigation remains ongoing.
