Debate over Fairfax County Library book toss

0

Officials continue to draw up solutions following Fairfax County Library’s recent mass book toss.

Providence Supervisor Linda Smyth, who had led the initial investigation of the book trashing, discovered thousands of library books in a Fairfax recycle bin.  While it is library policy to discard worn and outdated literature, many of the books were reportedly in newer condition.  A glitch in the system which allows library goers to return books to any of the 21 libraries in the county resulted in many of the wrong books being thrown out.

The book toss has since been ceased and the Library Board of Trustees has been instructed by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to “Go back to the drawing board and take a better look at the mechanisms and policies.”
