Navy Yard shooter suffered mental illness

Former Navy contractor, Aaron Alexis, who was gunned down by D.C. police following his mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, reportedly suffered from mental illness.

While the motive of his heinous crime, which left at least twelve people dead is still unclear, it is confirmed that 34-year-old Alexis had been receiving treatment since August by Veterans Affairs for paranoia, a sleeping disorder and voices in his head. Despite this his security clearance remained in place and Alexis gained access to the facility using a valid personnel pass Monday morning where he opened fire.

The violent attack leaves many open ended questions as to the effectiveness of background checks and all around protocol which determines military security clearance.

Mayor Vincent Gray described the attack as a “horrific tragedy”.

Law enforcement officials determined that the shooting had no ties to terrorist organizations.

Investigators continue to examine the details of the gruesome event.
