Tim Tebow traded to New York Jets, New Orleans Saints coach suspended

Tim Tebow, the previous quarterback for the Denver Broncos, was traded to the New York Jets on Wednesday for a fourth- and sixth-round pick after the Broncos signed Payton Manning. Manning was signed to the Broncos and received a five-year, $96 million contract. John Elway, the team vice president, was determined to trade Tebow, even though he led the Broncos to the playoffs. Last November, Tebow made a game-winning 20-yard touchdown drive with 58 seconds remaining.

Football mania continued on Wednesday as news surfaced that the NFL suspended New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton, General Manager Mickey Loomis, and former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams for their roles in a bounty system that provided the team players with payments for hits that injured their competition. According to an insider with knowledge of the punishments, Williams was suspended indefinitely, Payton was suspended for one year, and Loomis was suspended for eight games. The southern team was also fined $500,000 and loses two second-round draft picks, one in this year’s draft and another in 2013. The New Orleans Saints pay-for-pain program’s penalties are among the harshest in NFL history. In the 1960s, Green Bay Packers running back Paul Hornung and Detroit Lions defensive lineman Alex Karras were suspended, one year each, by then-commissioner Pete Rozelle for gambling.
