Voters head to Iowa caucus

After months of campaigning and 13 debates, Republican presidential candidates will begin to see whose hard work paid off, as Iowa voters head to polls. The Iowa ballots are the first in the primary and caucus calendar. While the eventual nominee is not determined by the Iowa caucuses, the early results can shape the race in coming months.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who tops most national polls, spoke confidently of his chances on Monday. “We’re going to win this thing with all of our passion and strength,” Romney said. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has now dropped to fourth in polls, blamed negative ads. Texas Rep. Ron Paul is in second, with Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in third. Santorum has seen a late surge of popularity, and with it increased donations.
