Mount Rainier remains closed after park ranger death

Washington’s Mount Rainier national park remained closed Tuesday as the park mourned the passing of park ranger Margaret Anderson. Authorities continued to investigate her death and the death of the man suspected of killing her. Benjamin Colton Barnes was found face down in a river in the park on Monday, one day after he shot Anderson. Anderson was killed when she and another officer created a roadblock to stop Barnes’ vehicle, which had sped through checkpoints. Barnes opened fire on the rangers.

The discovery of Barns in a river wearing only a t-shirt, jeans and one tennis shoe ends a massive manhunt across the park. It is believed Barnes died from elemental exposure. Barnes has also been connected with a Sunday shooting in a Seattle suburb that left four people wounded. Park staffers and residents took the time to mourn Anderson, who was the mother of two daughters aged 4 and 1.
