Obama jobs bill faces vote

0

The Democratic-controlled Senate is set to vote on President Obama’s jobs bill Tuesday evening. The $447 billion measure includes an expansion of the current payroll tax cut, and extension of jobless benefits to help the unemployed, tax credits for businesses that hire long-term unemployed and money to save and create jobs for teachers and firemen. The most controversial aspect of the bill is the proposed 5.6% surtax on people earning more than $1 million.

Republicans have been vehemently opposed to the surtax, calling it “class warfare”, and are expected to prevent the bill from receiving the necessary votes. They have also said they will prevent a vote from being held in the House of Representatives.
