Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney found themselves defending their stances at the last Republican debate before Iowa caucuses. Gingrich was challenged on his viability as a candidate against Obama, while Romney was questioned about his consistency on social issues. Gingrich countered that if the same thing had been asked of Ronald Reagan, he would not have secured the nomination.

Romney acknowledged his change in positions on issues like abortion. “My experience in life…has told me that sometimes I was wrong,” Romney said. “Where I was wrong, I tried to correct myself.” Instead, Romney tried to highlight his electability over Gingrich’s.
