George H. W. Bush backs Romney

Former president George H. W. Bush on Thursday publicly supported former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s White House bid. “I had no idea that was coming,” Romney said, adding that the backing meant more to him personally than it did politically. The support did not constitute an official endorsement, which is complicated by Bush living in the state of Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

“I like Perry, but he doesn’t seem to be going anywhere; he’s not surging forward,” Bush said. “I’ve got to be a little careful, because I like Perry; he’s our governor.” Bush told the Houston Chronicle that Romney was the “best choice” for the 2012 nomination.
