The Supreme Court threw out appeals from opponents of same-sex marriage in five states seeking to prohibit those unions. Effectively, this decision makes same-sex marriage legal in 30 states. The justices made the decision on Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin without comment or review. At 1 p.m., Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit will issue an order that will allow on-hold same-sex marriages to begin. The commonwealth will now also recognize marriages performed in other states. This decision hints at the course of future rulings by the Supreme Court. Similar opposition appeals from Colorado, Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming are still pending.
