Police, protesters clash at “Occupy Oakland”

0

The situation became tense Tuesday when police in riot gear dismantled the encampment at the Occupy Oakland protests, an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Police fired tear gas and bean bag rounds to clear out the makeshift city. Protesters gathered at a downtown library later that day and marched toward City Hall to re-establish their presence in the area. They were met by police in riot gear, and a series of skirmishes broke out, with some protesters throwing objects and more tear gas rounds fired by police.

City officials say 97 people were arrested. Protesters have promised to reconvene. Similar standoffs have been happening around the country. In Atlanta, Georgia, 53 people were arrested.
