Maryland may name soft-shell crab sandwich as official state sandwich
Maryland senator Richard Colburn, a republican from the Eastern Shore, is backing a bill filed with the Maryland General Assembly that would name soft-shell crab sandwiches the official sandwiches of Maryland. A staple on the Eastern Shore, soft-shell crab sandwiches could sit beside another seaside favorite, the Smith Island Cake, which was named the Maryland state dessert in 2008. Although the Eastern Shore represents only a portion of the state, it definitely receives the most recognition as tourists flock to the beaches. Culinary traditions from the Eastern Shore become instant favorites for many.
