VA delagate suggests getting rid of gas tax, increasing revenue

0

Virginia delegate Tim Hugo R-Fairfax, has proposed an alternative measure for raising much needed transportation revenue: omitting the state’s 17.5 cent gas tax. Instead, suggests Hugo, Virginia should raise sales taxes across the board from 5 percent to 5.9 percent. Then some money garnered from sales taxes would be allocated for the transportation fund. Hugo says his plan is a way to raise the $500 million needed in transportation revenue and would not divert money from other key programs such as schools and public safety. The Virginia General Assembly will reconvene on January 9th to discuss this, and other proposals for raising revenue for transportation.
